Centuries of Amnesia

My country Haiti has been in a stagnant political and economic mediocrity since its independence. Most Haitian politicians seem to suffer from Amnesia because they never remember that Coup D'etats, brutality and the destruction of each other never did any good to the country. They had two centuries to learn their lesson but after
205 years of independence, several decades of coup d'etat and illegitimate governments, no one has made a step that could led the country to a better future.

The good ones are either killed or are to afraid to talk. Some of them are living a nostalgic life in the U.S, France, Canada and other Latin American countries, while they are hoping that some day, they can come back to help their countries.

Unfortunately, History will always be there to remind me of the shameful behavior of Haitian politicians. I wished that I could have amnesia and forget that there are thousands of young Haitians who cannot graduate from High school because the Minister of Education keeps on failing them in their exam, there are thousands of young Haitian college graduates who can't get a job 5 years after they finished their studies at the University because the old daddies who are running the bureaucratic office in our country are too stubborn to let a young competent mind do the job. The most important thing that I would like to forget is that several children in Haiti have never been to school because the government is pleased to keep them uneducated. Since knowledge is power, in my country, my government keep its power by keeping the people and the youth in ignorance.

A few month ago, a Latin American politician said that Haiti is the shame of the Caribbean. A Dominican journalist said once that in order to fix Haiti, all those who inhabit the country should be exterminate. There are many things that I have heard about my country. I sometimes feel ashamed, I sometimes feel desperate when I hear them. There are some ugly picture of Haiti out there. They are outrageous but a few people seem to care if they are true or not.

I have heard so many bad things about my country that it is hard for me to believe someone if they tell me something nice about Haiti. I become paranoiac because whenever someone open his mouth about Haiti, I except to hear the same old negative bad things. The same old generalization like: Haitians eat dirt cookie, Haitians are all kidnappers, Haitians live only in cardboard boxes. Haitians this, Haitians that.

You know the stereotypical image that some ignorant people have of the African continent? This is the same thing about Haiti. They believe that we are a bunch of Negroes who cannot govern themselves. They believe that we are cannibals and live naked in a jungle. In other words, Haiti is just a piece of Africa that was taken from the continent and accidentally fail in the Caribbean sea.

This stereotype must be real because many people think that Haiti is about Cite Soleil, shantytowns and there is no beach in Haiti like in the other Caribbean islands. It is so true that when tourists go on cruise and ends up visiting Labadie which is a Haitian territory, they either think that they are in the Dominican Republic or in another coutnry. They can't believe that the citadelle is ours.

You know what? I am fed up with these ignorant people who blindly absorbed whatever the media tells them about Haiti. I am sick of those who don't try to educate themselves but instead, rely on fake articles that are written by AP, AFP and all the rests.

I dislike how so many people choose to remain ignorant despite the proof that those who write for AP and companies are all bias and ignorant on Haiti. No matter how I feel about them, I don't think that they are responsible.

I blame my government. I blame Rene Preval, Kelly Bastien, Joseph Guiler C. Delva (AP's little dog in Haiti) , Yourie Latortue and all the other Haitian Politicians. I blame all of them because it is their duties to make sure that the country has a nice image abroad.

I wish that I could have the dark soul of these individuals and live as if nothing happened. Unlike them, I am still a human being. I have a heart, and as long as I am living, I will never forget the humiliation that my country and young people like me went through because some greedy bastards were to worried about their bank accounts to care for their country.
It might makes sense that they don't care because most of them have dual citizenship.
